SAFe Agilist Exam Guide: Format, Pass Mark and How to Prepare
The SAFe Agilist (SA) exam is the certification test attached to the Leading SAFe course. It's taken online through the SAFe Community Platform, and your first attempt is included with course registration — you have 30 days after the class to use it. Here's what to expect and how to prepare efficiently.
Exam format
- Questions: 45, multiple-choice and multiple-select
- Duration: 90 minutes
- Delivery: web-based, closed book, unproctored, via the SAFe Community Platform
- Pass mark: Scaled Agile sets it per exam release; recent SA versions have required roughly three-quarters or more correct — check your candidate handbook for the exact current figure
- Retakes: second attempt available for a fee after a waiting period; the first is included with the course
What the questions feel like
Almost nothing is pure recall. The typical question is a two-to-four sentence scenario — a train mid-PI, a leader making a budgeting call, a dependency conflict — asking what SAFe recommends. Distractors are usually things a reasonable manager might do; the correct answer is the one aligned with Lean-Agile principles. This is why cramming term lists underperforms: the exam tests whether you can think in the framework.
Study plan by weight
- The Lean-Agile mindset and SAFe principles. The ten principles anchor a large share of scenario answers — know what each implies in practice, not just its name.
- ART mechanics. Roles (RTE, Product Management, System Architect), events (PI Planning, System Demo, Inspect & Adapt), and the team-of-teams cadence.
- PI Planning in detail. Inputs, outputs, the program board, confidence vote — expect several questions.
- Lean Portfolio Management basics. Strategic themes, Lean budgets and guardrails, epics and the portfolio Kanban.
- Built-in quality and flow. DevOps, the CALMR approach, and SAFe 6.0's flow accelerators.
Effective preparation: attend the two days actively (the exam is built from the courseware), re-read your workbook within a week, use the platform's practice test to calibrate, and drill the principles until you can argue each one.
After you pass
You receive the SAFe Agilist digital badge and one year of Community Platform membership.
